If you enemy size is the problem....why not reduce the size to a 1x1 tile !....I know it sounds bad....but listen up.
You could "in theory" make a large portion of the monsters graphic as the background image. Then only have a 1x1 tile representing the enemy....even though it looks like it takes half the screen or something.
I was planning on doing this with a giant bio-mechanical blob thing that would have different parts you could attack. Like a head, processor, sensor array, ect.
