Alpha and Beta are just terms used to track the progress of something. I'm not sure how exactly though. I think Alpha is when somethings somewhat usable, but still being programmed and can't be marketed. Beta is when it's completed, but it's still got tons of bugs, and that's where Beta Testers come in. I'm not sure if this is accurate though.
